NEW YORK — Incongruities are a fact of life in 2017, but for the most part they are often garish, monstrous even. Rare is she who can mix this with that and come out on top. Rihanna has been looking down from her perch for years and has made a career on pairing the seemingly disparate in service of novelty. The Bad Girl was at again Sunday night at the Seventh Regiment Armory where she gave invited guests and those huddled around glowing screens watching the livestream the world over quite a show, a spectacle replete with mountains of glittering pink sand and flying dirt bikes, all in support of her Fenty x Puma Spring 2018 collection. The collection itself was a clever amalgam of scuba diving and motocross, wrapped in a Puma shell. This meant formfitting silhouettes realized in a high-vis color palette. This is a collection ready to pounce, leap into action, just like the cat in the Puma logo. The German multinational athletic company has been producing active wear for nearly 70 years, but with Rihanna it has transformed mere production into work. On the night, seven models from across the Next global network including Selena Forrest, Grace Elizabeth, Aiden Curtiss, Piero Mendez, Hiandra Martinez, Marjan Jonkman, and Justin Martin walked in the runway show. Front of house, Diplo and Selah Marley were also seated front row.
