Japanese brand Sacai is launching a line of handbags for the first time since its creation in 1999, a collection it presented at its spring-summer 2017 fashion show in Paris. After cutting her teeth with Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe at Comme des Garçons, Chitose Abe decided to create her own brand, forging a unique identity through her innovative take on meshwork. Her inspirations, taken exclusively from Tokyo, combine to form a contemporary DNA comprising blended materials, conceptual cuts, abundant colors, and generous volumes. In 2009, Sacai launched its men’s line, as Abe won the “Designer of the Year” prize awarded by the Fashion Editors Club of Japan. After a series of collaborations with brands like Rei Kawakubo and Moncler, Abe has firmly established her name in the fashion world, opening 90 shops worldwide, including 35 in Japan. Her name joined the Paris fashion week official calendar with her first runway show for Sacai’s fall-winter 2012/2013 collection. Today, Sacai represents a feminine and innovative brand full of fantasy, audacious cuts, and superimposed textures, prints, and colors. For its first handbag collection, Sacai has created six models that revisit the basics, while providing a host of leather touches (smooth and embossed) mixed with suede, crocodile, and fringes – one of 2016’s top trends. To celebrate this first collection, the designer decided to collaborate with Craig McDean and Karl Templer to spotlight the handbags in a mysterious short movie. The video features models Alice Metza, Binx Walton, Lexi Bolling, Jess Picton Warlow, and Kiki Williams in a somber and strange staging filled with everyday noises. Shifting away from the bags, the video shows the ladies sitting on chairs and staring at the camera with unusual gestures. The collection is available exclusively at Colette in Paris.
